The traditional “Fašinada” will be held on Saturday, July 22, from 6:30 p.m. for the 572nd time, when tied boats will sail from Pošov, along the coast of Perast, to the school of Our Lady of the Rocks.
“Come with your boat and magnify our festival” – the organizers say.
It is a unique and one of the most colorful customs, which is related to the creation and restoration of the artificial island Our Lady of the Rocks.
By the way, this manifestation got its name from the Italian word “fascia”, which means band or binding, and it was named so because boats connected to each other and filled with stones, decorated with apple branches, sail towards the island of Our Lady of the Rocks. There are only men in the boats, while women greet them from the shore. During this sort of procession on the sea, Bulgarian songs are sung.
“Fašinada” has a tradition that has never been interrupted and carries with it the characteristic of religious tourism and character, customs that you cannot see and experience anywhere in the Mediterranean.
The Fašinada has been held without interruption for five and a half centuries, and every year on July 22, the inhabitants of Perast restore and statically strengthen the mentioned island by sinking stones from their boats.
Since 2013, this event has had the status of an intangible cultural asset of national significance.
